Clinical Analysis of 2,937 Cases with Gastrointestinal Diseases

Abstract
A statistical study was performed on 2, 937 cases with gastrointestinal diseases of over 15 years of age admitted to the Kyungpook National University Hospital during the 10 years from 1965 to 1974 and the following results were obtained.
1. Among total cases of 2,937, 2,062 was male and 875 was female. About 25.8% of the cases belonged to the age group of 6th decade. Annual frequency of admissions showed no significant variation during the years of observation.
2. The over-all frequency of each diseases was in the order of stomach cancer(21.55%), stomach ulcer (18.66%), duodenal ulcer (6.68%), appendicitis (16.63%), gastroduodenitis(8.85%) intestinal obstruction(6.27%), colon cancer(3.30%), esophageal cancer(l. 91%) and so on.
3. Annual incidence of admissions of cases with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract and peptic ulcer showed no significant variation, but gastric and colon cancer showed a tendency to decrease as compared with total number of admission in department of internal medicine and general surgery in each year.
4. Of total 2,937 cases cancer was found in 799cases (27%). The frequency of cancer by site was in the order of stomach cancer(79 2%), colon cancer(12.2%), esophageal cancer (7.0%) and cancer of the small intestine(1.6%).
5. In esophageal cancer more than half of cases (51.8%) was in the age group of 6th decade. Male to female ratio was 7 : 1.
6. In stomach cancer the highest number was in 6th decade. About 11.8% of male and 26.3% of female cases belonged to the 3rd-4th decades.
7. In colon and rectal cancer, about 72.2% was found in the sigmoid and rectum. The highest number was in 6th decade, and that of male was in 6th decade while that of female in 5t decade. In female cases 39.3% was found in the young age group (2nd-4th decades). Male to female ratio was. 1.5 : 1.
8. In stomach ulcer the hi best nu .ber(55.8%) was in 5th and 6th decades, While ¢¥in d odenal ulcer the highest number (50.6%). was in ith and 5th decades. Male to female ratio was 4. 5 : 1 in stomach ulcer and. 3.2 : 1 in duodenal ulcer.
9. Most frequent complication of stomach ulcer was hemorrhage(22.4% of cases) while that of duodenal ulcer was perforation (15.7% of cases).
